The recently announced Fall Nature Study and Survival Skills homeschool curriculum is a two-year program that educators can use to teach students basic science and environmental awareness. Unique to this program is the inclusion of survival skills, the team behind the curriculum says.
Why Nature Matters In Education:
In a recent study cited by the University of Berkley, a group of fifth-grade children who were taught math, writing, and science integrated with hands-on activities in a local wetland performed better than students learning strictly in the classroom. A separate study showed that students who were taught in schools with more surrounding trees outperformed students from schools with little or no trees.
Running Wild Explorers understands how the benefits of learning in a natural environment can be specifically utilized by homeschool educators and as such, they have created their fall curriculum, giving educators a chance to augment their current program by empowering their students to connect with the outside world. A major advantage of the curriculum is the important survival skills it teaches, which are often overlooked by nature study programs.
Among the activities incorporated in the Fall curriculum is an experiment that demonstrates how Artic animals stay warm in the coming winter and how to pack appropriately for a day hike in fall weather. The curriculum can be tailored for all grades, K-8, and can be broken down into a 4 or 6-year programs. Throughout the program, animals, birds, and plant life will be studied along with basic survival skills.
The curriculum was developed by Krista Davis, a homeschool mom of three who has taught for twelve years. She enjoyed nature study curriculums but found them lacking in outdoor survival skill knowledge.
