Course to Improve College and Career Readiness for Teen Moms – Dear Future Me by The Simmons Empowerment Foundation Inc.

By: Get News
The Simmons Empowerment Foundation Inc. (TSEFI) was founded in 2020. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping at-risk students, especially teen moms, acquire the knowledge and skills to succeed in life. It empowers through the Dear Future Me online program.

According to announcements released by The Simmons Empowerment Foundation Inc. and Rhonda Simmons, this organization’s Dear Future Me program is a highly interactive and fully virtual course. It aims to help at-risk students ages 15-21 prepare for college and career. The program can be accessed online anytime, through any device. Apart from the digital content, one is provided with live, virtual, group empowerment coaching to share experiences and absorb life lessons through healthy interaction.

The team of coaches at The Simmons Empowerment Foundation Inc. consists of trained and empathetic professionals driven to help at-risk students, especially teen moms. The team of coaches includes school administrators, counselors, authors, a doctor, and national motivational speakers. They have rich experience and education to share from diverse fields. The program aims to enroll the students in a college or vocational school or get them interned in an industry or business, where they can pick up valuable skills.

States track students’ readiness for college and career from elementary to high school. There are multiple factors that identify students as being at-risk for high school dropout. One of those factors is being pregnant or being a parent before the age of 21. Another is repeating a grade in school. Regardless of the at-risk factor, these students find it challenging to prepare for college and career unlike their non-at-risk peers. The Dear Future Me program seeks to narrow this gap by equipping at-risk students with the tools and resources they need to be successful.

The 9-week course includes ten learning modules and many interactive activities. The weekly group empowerment coaching sessions track progress and provide accountability and recommendations for the best outcome.

Rhonda Simmons, TSEFI’s Founder/CEO, said, “Just before moving to Texas in 2003 with my active-duty husband, I asked God to show me how I could positively impact others. Through a course at Central Texas College, The Problems with Children and Adolescents, I first became aware of the alarming statistics concerning Texas teen moms. Right then, I knew what I had been guided to do and that we had been sent to Texas for a divine purpose. In the past 15+ years, I have made it my mission to empower myself with the necessary tools to make an impact on teen moms. I furthered my education, became a Texas educator and administrator in Title I schools, foster parented, and partnered with other nonprofit organizations with similar visions. The Dear Future Me program is the next step in the vision I had almost 20 years ago.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control (2020), Texas has the ninth highest teen pregnancy rate in the US. Furthermore, The Texas Tribune (2022) reported that Texas has the highest repeat teen births in the nation. Teen moms are the benefactors of all that TSEFI does. The goal of our Dear Future Me program is to support teen moms and other at-risk students as they intentionally plan for their futures.

There are many sources that can help TSEFI reach teen moms with our Dear Future Me program. For example, organizations such as The Department of Family Protective Services or the Boys and Girls Club of America have similar missions as TSEFI.
