There are over 700 events celebrating performing, literary, and visual arts, presenting professional work of the highest standard. Almost half of the events are admission-free, and the rest are offered at affordable prices.

The Outdoor Art Exhibit at Marion Square is free and during this season, the area becomes an open-air market for the local visual artists to exhibit and sell their creative works – original oils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, encaustics, photography, sculpture, printmaking, drawings, and more.

Among the fine artists displaying works at the outdoor exhibit is Victoria Platt Ellis. Her paintings include local architecture, the ocean surf and the creatures it holds, as well as animals, bugs, people and plants especially flowers that she uses for reference. Her artwork is created using a variety of media including acrylics, oils and watercolors. She says she loves being an artist living near the ocean because of the abundance of reference material available. She has painted several series of paintings that are available to view on her website.

She has a Charleston flare and that may be because she has been creating art in the Charleston area for quite some time. Nautical Charts is a series in which she incorporates the twists and turns of the rivers and waterways into her art as well as actual nautical charts often depicting the area near Charleston. 95 Days of Summer is another one of her series that started with a challenge to draw or create a painting for each of the “95 days of summer”. Her studio in Summerville, SC is home to the garden that is the inspiration for her January to December “In My Garden” series.

In conjunction with the Outdoor Art Exhibition, the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs presents the Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition Cash Awards for Best Photography, Best Printmaking, Best Sculpture, Best Painting, Best Drawing, and Best in Show. This event is held at the City Gallery at Joe Riley Waterfront Park during the Festival.

With so many things to do and see during the festival it is recommended to plan for multiple days. The guide on the website above is a great place to start for those interested in attending the festival.
