The Hangzhou Cultural Relics and Archaeology Institute on Oct 10 inked a partnership with the department of cultural relics and museology at Fudan University, one of the most prestigious universities in China, to set up a base for education and research.

The Hangzhou Cultural Relics and Archaeology Institute is the only organization authorized by the State Administration of Cultural Relics to conduct archaeological investigation, exploration and research of archaeological documents.

Founded in 2012, the institute has carried out 618 archaeological exploration projects and unearthed 17,227 relics.

According to Lu Jiansong, director of the department of cultural relics and museology at Fudan University, the department has a complete range of majors covering archaeology, museum sciences and protection of cultural relics.

Lu said that the department has 10 research platforms, five of which are of provincial and minister level, and six laboratories.

He also expressed hope that Fudan University will utilize its resources to help Hangzhou better preserve its cultural heritage.

After the ceremony to mark the founding of the base, experts were taken on a tour of some cultural relics that date back to the Song Dynasty (420-479).
