Jenna C. Wins Morelli Law Firm's Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor Scholarship

The psychobiology major receives $10,000 toward her education at UCLA.

Jenna C., a psychobiology student at UCLA with a minor in brain and behavioral health, is this year's winner of the $10,000 award. Her essay centered on a terrifying incident in which she was the victim of a violent crime. While she and her friend Rudy were driving, a stranger slammed his car into theirs, pinning them against the guardrail. He then chased Jenna after she escaped the car, attempting a sexual assault before her friend caught up and fought the stranger off.

As a result of this heinous act, Jenna was left with a traumatic brain injury, severe post-traumatic stress disorder, emotional trauma, and physical wounds. However, the experience has strengthened her resolve to enter the medical field.

"As horrible as this event was, I now am very confident in my choice to go into the medical field. I have a strong desire to help others, and this event gave me the clarity to know that I am on the right path for my future," she wrote in her winning essay.

Jenna C. is no stranger to TBIs. Years earlier, she suffered her first traumatic brain injury after falling off a horse. "I had three subarachnoid hemorrhages, was airlifted to Children's Hospital Los Angeles and almost had brain surgery," she told Morelli Law Firm representatives. After overcoming many challenges (such as intense headaches, brain fog, and memory loss), Jenna was still set on helping others.

She started working with the Bresee Foundation, tutoring young people and helping them get their grades up in school. A four-year practitioner and teacher of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, she has worked with UCLA's BJJ team and is in talks with the Bresee Foundation to start up a BJJ training program with their organization.
