PRLog - Jul. 24, 2014 - ISLIP, N.Y. -- NYIT/Vocational Independence Program, a nationally recognized program for serving the transition and post-secondary requirements of special needs students, announced today that it will be holding an open house on September 8 and November 1, offering immediate decisions on September 8 for the 2014 academic year at the campus at 300 Carleton Avenue in Central Islip.

“We are looking forward to welcoming prospective students and parents to see our facility and learn more about our residential programs for students with learning disabilities,” said Ernst VanBergeijk, Associate Dean and Executive Director of NYIT/VIP. “We focus on academics, independent living, social skills development and vocational exploration and training as well as offering a Pre-Degree Program and Associate Degree Support Program, which guides students through traditional NYIT academic courses.”

The three-year residential program is designed for students with learning challenges and higher functioning autism. Students advance through the program learning key life skills, social interaction skills and core academics.

“Students have an opportunity to choose from 3 different programs: our Vocational Independence Program, our pre-degree program or the option to earn an associate's degree in business administration or communication arts in three years.” VanBergeijk said. “We are focused on creating an environment for future success. Our goals are to help students transition into to world of work and independent living or transition into a degree bearing college program full time”

Students in the New York Institute of Technology VIP program receive support from a number of career, educational and life professionals. The team includes an academic counselor, vocational counselor, social counselor, financial counselor and job coach/independent living coach as necessary.

There are a limited number of spots available in the program for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. Families interested in enrolling students for the 2014 school year should plan to attend the open house on Monday, September 8 at 10 a.m. Immediate Decisions for 2014-2015 will be available.
