National Safety Month and Resources for California Businesses and Institutions

By: WebWire

National Safety Month is celebrated in California and across the nation during the month of June. The observance, begun by the National Safety Council, has taken place each year since 1996. It has been designed as a time for organizations, companies and individuals to increase awareness of workplace safety and health risks and to make efforts to reduce occupational injuries and deaths.

To protect workers in California, the California Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1973 was enacted by the legislature to assure safe and healthful working conditions for all workers. It created the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), better known as Cal/OSHA, to enforce effective standards, assist and encourage employers to maintain safe and healthful working conditions, and to provide for enforcement, research, information, education and training in the field of occupational safety and health.

“EHS programs play a vital role in safeguarding California's workforce,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing's Huntington Beach facility. “This is important as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports there were 463 fatal occupational injuries recorded in the state as recently as 2020. The California Department of Industrial Relations also recorded over 448,000 nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses that same year. That is a lot of occupational fatalities, injuries and illnesses. Each case impacts a worker's quality of life, and collectively are a huge financial cost to businesses.”

LA Testing supports the efforts of National Safety Month year-round by providing industrial hygiene and environmental testing services for chemical, microbial and radiological hazards. Their California laboratories also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment (PPE), building inspection tools and more. LA Testing even recently sponsored an educational video about National Safety Month that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/ygdLjYfG8z0
