California Company Recalls Probiotics Due to Potential Bacterial Contamination

By: WebWire

Last month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a health and wellness company based in California that voluntarily recalled two lots of a liquid probiotic. The eight products impacted by the recall are designed for use by people and pets. The products were distributed nationwide through an online retailer, via wholesale, and from direct sales from the company's website.

The recall was issued due to concerns about potential contamination with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. According to the recall notice:

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a microorganism found in the environment that, if ingested, can cause life-threatening infection in immunocompromised individuals. P. aeruginosa infections are generally limited to hospital settings.

“Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacteria that can cause disease not only in humans, but also in animals and even plants,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing's Huntington Beach facility. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that serious Pseudomonas infections usually occur in people in the hospital and/or with a weakened immune system, but also states that healthy people can develop mild illnesses from contact with the bacteria.”

Dedicated to helping manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and importers prevent these types of costly product recalls, and the health risks associated with contaminated products reaching consumers, are the microbial testing experts at LA Testing. With multiple laboratories in California, LA Testing provides microbial and chemical testing for a broad spectrum of contaminants, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
