Revenue growth

Examining a company’s long-term performance can provide clues about its quality. Any business can post a good quarter or two, but many enduring ones grow for years. Over the last five years, Boise Cascade’s demand was weak and its revenue declined by 2.8% per year. This fell short of our standards and points to poor business quality.

Boise Cascade quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within industrials, a half-decade historical view may miss new industry trends or demand cycles. Boise Cascade’s annualized revenue declines of 1.5% over the last two years suggest its demand continued shrinking.

Boise Cascade year-on-year revenue growth

The company’s most important segments, Building Material Distribution and Wood products, account for 92.6% and 25.6% of revenue. Over the last two years, Boise Cascade’s Building Material Distribution revenue (plywood, siding, insulation) was flat while its Wood products revenue (lumber and beams) averaged 5% year-on-year declines.

Boise Cascade quarterly revenue by segment

This quarter, Boise Cascade reported year-on-year revenue growth of 8.1%, and its $1.80 billion of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 2.4%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 3.7% over the next 12 months, according to S&P. Although this projection implies its newer products and services will improve revenue performance, it is still below the sector average.

Operating margin

Boise Cascade has managed its cost base reasonably well over the last five years. The company has produced an average operating margin of 8.1%, higher than the broader industrials sector.

Looking at the trend in its profitability, Boise Cascade’s operating margin decreased by 11.6 percentage points over the last five years. Even though its historical margin was healthy, shareholders will want to see Boise Cascade become more profitable in the future.

Boise Cascade trailing 12-month operating margin (GAAP)

In Q3, Boise Cascade generated an operating margin of 3.1%, up 1.2 percentage points year on year. The increase was a positive development and shows its expenses recently grew more slowly than its revenue, leading to higher efficiency.

Earnings per share

We track the long-term change in earnings per share, or EPS, for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

Boise Cascade’s EPS declined by 25% annually over the last five years, more than its revenue. This indicates the company struggled because its fixed cost base made it difficult to adjust to shrinking demand.

Boise Cascade trailing 12-month EPS (GAAP)

A closer look at Boise Cascade’s earnings helps explain its performance. As we mentioned earlier, Boise Cascade’s operating margin expanded this quarter but declined by 11.6 percentage points over the last five years. This was the most relevant factor (aside from the revenue impact) behind its lower earnings; interest expenses and taxes can also affect EPS but don’t tell us as much about a company’s fundamentals.

As with revenue, we analyze EPS over a more recent period because it can provide insight into an emerging theme or development for the business.

For Boise Cascade, its two-year annual EPS declines of 42.3% show it’s continued to underperform. These results were poor across both periods.

In Q3, Boise Cascade reported EPS of $1.04, up from $0.58 in the same quarter last year. Despite growing year on year, EPS missed analysts’ consensus estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects Boise Cascade’s full-year EPS to grow 38.4% from $3.40 to $4.71, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from Boise Cascade’s Q3 results

Boise Cascade delivered a mixed quarter despite beating analysts’ consensus revenue estimates. EPS missed expectations, and EBITDA guidance for next quarter also fell short of Wall Street’s consensus. Shares edged higher 1.2% to $75.99 immediately after the results.

When deciding whether to buy the stock, the latest quarter matters, but longer-term fundamentals and valuation matter more. Read the full research report here (it’s free).
