Men of Color in Educational Leadership has opened registration for their annual national convening scheduled for December 2022.

(PRUnderground) September 14th, 2022

Men of Color in Educational Leadership (MCEL) has opened registration for their annual National Convening event taking place December 2-4, 2022, at the Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore. The event brings together male leaders of color across the country in all education roles—from assistant principals to current and former superintendents—to discuss solutions to the pending extinction of men of color in positions of leadership throughout the current education system.

The convening event offers an opportunity for men of color to experience growth, healing and development and to become effective leaders in education, centering around MCEL’s theory for change: Quality, Quantity, & Care.

“Our goal for this national event is to bring together male educators of color,” says Harrison Peters, co-founder and CEO of MCEL. “Comprising less than 5% of the current workforce, educational leadership roles held by men of color are facing extinction by 2032. It is imperative that we address the diminishing role of male leaders of color and recognize it as a serious problem that requires creative and impactful solutions as we strengthen and equip men of color to take on more leadership roles.”

Men of Color in Educational Leadership (MCEL) is a collective of male leaders of color across the country. The organization provides a safe space to engage in an honest and open discussion with those experiencing a similar set of challenges around race and education. MCEL offers pathways for professional development as well as the opportunity to network.

Harrison Peters has served pre-K-12 public school students throughout the country in roles including assistant principal, dean of students, chief of schools, and assistant superintendent.  He has worked in large school districts facing the challenge of fewer resources and higher needs including Chicago Public Schools, Hillsborough County Schools, and Houston Independent School District. Peters is a graduate of Nova Southeastern University where he received his master’s degree in educational leadership.
