Are We Losing the Ability to Communicate with Others Through Artificial Intelligence?

-- As Artificial Intelligence continues to weave itself into workplaces and daily life a growing question is emerging: What is AI doing to the way we “Communicate with one another”?

Many consultants in the training industry are using Ai when developing training programs, slides and designing workbooks for training purposes. It has made work productivity a lot faster and at times more convenient even enhancing some of the content. But with this convenience comes the deeper question. Are we adopting AI driven expressions and language structures in our own speech, and in doing so, are we losing some of the basic elements of communication?

Over the past few years many of us have not only embraced AI for automation but also for developing learning and training experiences within the workplace. Some use it for research, others for ideas and engagement activities. This does speed up the actual delivery and saves the company money but at what cost? It can be influencing how employees communicate together when they collaborate or even worse when they de-escalate. The language and style shaped by Ai apps are slowly creeping into our own language and could start replacing the natural exchange between trainers and their learners. Losing empathy and connection in the process.

Communication Expert David Alssema points to the risk of losing the important connections such as empathy, emotional intelligence, and being genuine. These are the smaller paralinguistic signals that are important to understand the meaning of content. Signals such as a pause in a sentence, a shift in the tone, or an expression or gesture that connects us together and builds rapport. All these elements cannot be replicated with Ai. We now need to make a conscious decision as workplaces may prioritise efficiency at the expense of human connection. Slowly we may not see these elements missing and they may become obsolete.

Although AI can also offer new opportunities. Used thoughtfully, it can support customised training that is then adapted by a trainer to different learning styles, making knowledge more accessible and connected. The key is about striking a balance. If consultants let AI handle structural or repetitive tasks, whilst ensuring that human interaction, trust, and understanding remain the main focus.

This is where structured development workshops, such as Communication Training, play an important role. By focusing on active listening, asking purposeful questions, and navigating difficult conversations, such sessions ensure that employees strengthen the very skills that AI cannot replace.

The future of communication may not be about making the hard choice between humans and Ai, but about creating a learning space where both work with each other as a blended approach. Artificial Intelligence can provide streamlined efficiency, but we must preserve the emotional depth, creativity, and connection that make communication and learning more meaningful.

Paramount Training and Development has recently released a new Ai adaptive learning system to enhance employee training. By using human metrics within training they have been able to engage users with Ai however adapting it to the learning environment with oversight from actual human trainers as they interact.

Each participant is adapted based on their individual experiences or current knowledge of the topic, then the trainers oversee the engagement and delivery of the program or content. Participants are tailored to based on the time they spend on each topic, or the results from their responses. Some participants will need more time, others less. This helps different groups at different levels to find the answers they need on each topic, and is more engaged as they are not listening through hours of already known content. Its a hybrid option, working well as it increases knowledge, activities and ideas, whilst still providing an interactive training environment.

As Artificial Intelligence increases its influence within the Professional Development industry, it is important to remember to include the human element into the end assessment or at least the interaction between Ai and the participant. Having the right mix is key to all enjoying the learning experience.
