View Life Through a Creator’s Eyes with Rob Mango’s Book, 100 Paintings: An Artist’s Life in New York City

Explore New York City in a new way with a book that is equal parts monograph and memoir. Rob Mango shares his artistic journey from Chicago to Tribeca’s storied streets in NYC. The book chronicles impressions captured during decades of on-foot explorations through the city.

-- Explore one of the world’s most interesting cities through a unique perspective in 100 Paintings: An Artist’s Life in New York City by Rob Mango. The book, which is both a memoir and a monograph, includes more than 200 full-color artworks and photographs documenting an artistic journey more than four decades in the making.

Mango grew up in Chicago and studied painting from an early age, although he has been as much an athlete as an artist throughout his life. He excelled in track and earned a scholarship to the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, where he studied art. Mango set a world record in 1972 and won the U.S. track and field championship. Following that up with another world record for the indoor 880-yard run the next year, he went on to find success exhibiting his work in Chicago galleries.

After moving to New York City in 1977, Mango began exploring the city on foot. He settled in Tribeca and opened the Neo Persona Gallery with Norman H. Segal in 1984. Unable to leave his athletic or artistic inclinations behind, Mango captured his impressions of the city from his unique perspective.

“Mango’s paintings can be seen as being produced by a man whose body was fed oxygen to a fantastical high while running through the city,” said art critic Robert Mahoney in the foreword.

The body of work included in 100 Paintings: An Artist’s Life in New York City covers a vast range of topics and themes that could only have been accumulated through more than 40 years of living in such a historic place. From the birth and growth of the Tribeca neighborhood to the horrors of 9/11 and the resulting aftermath, follow Mango’s journey through vibrant, vivid imagery showcasing the artist’s singular perspective.

Mango’s work includes drawings, assemblages, sculptures, paintings, and ground-breaking painted-sculptural hybrid works created from 1975 through 2014. Mango’s body of work represents his entire life as an artist, including his stints in various regions.

“Featured in this retrospective are a series of epic, large-scale paintings set in a fantastic New York, replete with the city’s iconic architectural landmarks, but populated by gods, warriors, shamans, and other figures drawn from many epochs and cultures,” the book’s description reads.

The book also includes portraits of famous (and infamous) subjects, pastoral scenes from a rural village in Tuscany, and a breathtaking series of nude paintings. Reviewers love Mango’s distinct artistic style and the engaging combination of biography and art critique within the pages.

“This book offers a vivid pictorial representation of Mango’s artistic journey and provides insights into New York City’s vibrant art scene,” one reader stated. “It is a brilliant masterpiece for art lovers.”
