Home Teeth Whitening Methods: Expert Product Efficacy & Safety Guide Released

Valleant, a platform dedicated to health literacy, has published a new guide comparing the efficacy and safety of various teeth whitening methods.

-- According to Research and Market data, the teeth whitening industry is worth nearly $9 billion worldwide, with available solutions ranging from light therapy to chemical treatments and everything in between. However, many consumers find themselves questioning which of these treatments actually work—a question which Valleant has set out to answer in their latest guide.

In this new guide, Valleant’s experts investigated a number of different whitening solutions while also explaining exactly how teeth whitening products function. In addition, they showcase some lifestyle changes and natural whitening options for readers not interested in bleaching treatments or other potentially harmful solutions.

As Valleant explains, most teeth whitening treatments use chemical bleaching agents to penetrate beneath the enamel in order to target the discolored material underneath, called dentin. Doing so, however, can also irritate the surrounding tissue, leading to gum pain and, most commonly, painful sensitivity to temperature and pressure.

Some solutions also use a UV light to accelerate the effects of these chemical agents, though the team warns that using these improperly can damage the enamel and cause additional consequences. The trade-off, they say, is that these solutions often require fewer treatments than their chemical-only alternatives.

Natural alternatives and home remedies do exist that could replace these options, though patients often report mixed results even after long-time use. One popular method is to brush with a mixture of baking soda and water or baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, a method which has shown great promise in removing surface stains.

Valleant closes their guide with a reminder, stating, “Individuals should consider their oral health history when selecting a solution, as those with sensitive gums or teeth might experience discomfort. A dental professional can provide personalized recommendations and treatments, which often achieve faster and more noticeable results.”
