Coral Gables Plumbers Address Leaking Septic Tank Issue Amidst Rising Sea Levels

Miami, Florida based Eco 1 Plumbing company addresses the prominent leaking septic tank issue amidst the continuous rising sea levels in much of South Florida.

With nearly half of Coral Gables, Florida residencies on septic tanks and many of them reportedly leaking since 2020, local plumbing service companies such as Eco 1 Plumbing of Miami have been considering the fallout of the problem as sea levels rise. A handful of these local plumbers have agreed that Coral Gables is one of the most beautiful towns in America, citing the city’s Mediterranean Revival architecture, tree-shaded boulevards and winding waterways, fine dining and graceful living, with representatives of Eco 1 believing it has earned its reputation as a world-class city.

“This is a hot topic we’ve been talking about for years,” says Norberto Borgeat, Eco 1’s owner and master plumber, who boasts more than 25 years of expertise in the installation, reparation and maintenance of piping systems. “There are lots of tanks that are not properly maintained at all, and when talking about our drinking water or Biscayne Bay, that’s a concern. As sea levels rise, we need a foot of difference between the elevation of fresh and sea water to make sure salt water doesn’t move inland, but septic systems were not designed with the assumption that groundwater levels would rise gradually over time.”

According to data analyzed by Eco 1 and other Miami area plumbing experts, an estimated 7,000 properties in Coral Gables - most of them single-family residences - are on septic systems, equating to between 40 and 50-percent of the city’s 51,000 residents flushing toilets and draining grey water from sinks and washing machines into concrete boxes buried in the yard. If the systems are working properly, says Borgeat, the liquid waste passes through a drain field before being filtered through a layer of dry soil, with most commercial properties in the downtown area and along the U.S. 1 corridor hooked up to a sewer system that the city owns and operates.

In Miami-Dade County, meanwhile, where sea levels have already risen four inches since 1994, more than 105,000 residential properties still use septic systems, according to a 2018 Miami-Dade County report looked at by Eco 1 Plumbing representatives, with more than half of those systems periodically compromised - i.e. not working properly during storms or wet years. By 2040, that number is expected to increase to more than 67,000.

“The environmental impact of faulty septic systems is difficult to track, mainly because the systems are the property of homeowners, regulated by the state Department of Health,” adds Borgeat. “We are lucky in the city, as in the lower areas, like south of Old Cutler, homes are on sanitary sewer; most homes with septic are on higher ground. Indeed, conversion is not easy and represents a significant undertaking, what with right-of-way acquisition and tearing up roads, but we need to start thinking more critically and decide what is going to work.”

Miami Waterkeeper, in partnership with the Miami Foundation, announced plans to launch a campaign to inform voters about the importance of converting septic tanks to sewers, citing it as a “key component of environmental resiliency.”
