18 Feb, 2026 - Brin Hamilton’s powerful new novel, This Life, offers an unflinching look at the devastating realities of childhood neglect, family dysfunction, and systemic failure, while also illuminating the resilience of the human spirit.
Inspired by real experiences, This Life tells the story of Callie, a young girl born into a household marked by addiction, violence, and abandonment. Her father, Chas, battles alcoholism, while her mother, Corrine, drifts between neglect and cruelty. In this chaotic environment, Callie’s bruises, hunger, and loneliness go unnoticed by neighbors, teachers, and social services. Despite fleeting moments of kindness, she is left to endure fear, confusion, and isolation.
Hamilton does not shy away from the darkest corners of Callie’s world. The novel highlights how domestic violence between parents ripples through every member of a family, how schools and institutions miss critical warning signs, and how threats and mistrust silence children. However, amid the heartbreak, the story also offers hope. Acts of compassion, from a caring teacher to a neighbor who sees beyond the surface, and later foster parents who provide stability, become lifelines that prove love can interrupt even the deepest cycles of trauma.
More than a work of contemporary literary fiction, This Life is a call to awareness. It speaks to survivors of childhood trauma, to educators and social workers, to foster parents and advocates, and to readers who believe in the power of fiction to tell truths society often ignores.
“Compassion is not just kindness. It’s justice for children failed by the systems meant to protect them,” Hamilton notes. “Callie’s story reminds us how vital it is to listen, to notice, and to act.”
This Life is a haunting, necessary novel that will resonate with anyone who has experienced, witnessed, or sought to prevent the silent suffering of children.
About the Author
Brin Hamilton was born in Birmingham, UK, and has worked around the world as an architectural consultant. With a lifelong passion for literature, Hamilton blends art, truth, and storytelling to shed light on society’s most pressing issues. Started life in Birmingham UK and my early education was at The Oratory Primary School, a catholic school run by nuns (Sisters of Charity) getting an excellent grounding in all subjects. Passed the entrance examination for Moseley School of Art in Birmingham where all elements of the arts were studied (art and literature) all to an excellent standard together with the usual general subjects. It was a unique education only offered by one other school in England, sadly they no longer exist as schools leaving a vacuum in our education system.
Graduated in Construction & Design, then achieve a master’s degree (MPhil) and spent the majority of life working as an Architectural Consultant working in the United Kingdom and several countries around the world. Art, architecture, painting, drawing and above all literature are deeply embedded and enjoyed as a bedrock of my life.
