New Final Expense Policy Provides Financial Protection and Planning Support for Military Families

USAA Life Insurance Company is expanding its life insurance portfolio to better serve members at every stage of life with a new life insurance offering designed not only to help cover end-of-life expenses, but to encourage meaningful conversations that ensure families are prepared and protected.

With the introduction of USAA SecureTM Final Expense Whole Life Insurance, USAA is providing more member value and redefining end-of-life planning not as a transaction, but as one final act of service – a continuation of the lifelong commitment military families make to protect those who depend on them most.

The policy is designed to help members carry out that final mission with confidence. Available to individuals ages 45 to 85 in most states with coverage ranging from $5,000 to $40,000, the policy provides an accessible way to help cover funeral expenses, medical bills and other final costs – while encouraging families to come together and plan ahead. The product also includes a first-of-its-kind Eagle Plus rider where members can secure their family’s future with a complimentary digital estate plan through Trust & Will, the leading digital estate planning platform.

The need for preparation has never been clearer. According to the USAA Educational Foundation, financial readiness across the military community is strong overall – but uneven in practice. While many households have stable incomes, persistent financial stress remains common, and nearly one in four military-connected households have less than $500 in emergency savings – leaving them vulnerable to unexpected expenses.

At the same time, the National Funeral Directors Association says funeral costs for burials now average more than $8,300, with cremation costs exceeding $6,300. Even with Social Security benefits, most families receive only a one-time $255 death benefit – leaving loved ones to shoulder the majority of costs during an already difficult time. Together, these realities highlight a growing gap between the intention to protect one’s family and the financial preparedness to do so.

“Service doesn’t stop,” said Rob Arena, President of USAA Life Insurance Company. “Our members have spent their lives taking care of others. This is about helping them fulfill one final mission – making sure their families are protected, prepared and supported when it matters most.”

The policy provides a clear, dependable way to carry out that mission. With lifelong protection and level premiums, it offers stability when families need it most. Coverage of up to $40,000 helps ease the financial burden of final expenses, while simplified underwriting and no medical exams make it easy to safeguard your family’s future.

At its core, the launch reinforces a simple but powerful message: start the conversation. Conversations about end-of-life planning – between spouses, partners, children, and loved ones – can help ensure wishes are understood, decisions are documented, and families are not left with uncertainty.

USAA recognizes that planning is not one-size-fits-all. While solutions like the Association’s recently added USAA Secure™ Whole Life, which combines permanent protection with digital estate planning through Trust & Will, meet the needs of some members, others are seeking simpler, more targeted coverage. The launch of this new product, along with other planned additions to USAA’s portfolio, reflects a focused commitment to serving a broader range of member needs – meeting individuals where they are and helping more families take the first step toward planning.

“This is why discussions are so important. Planning ahead is one of the most meaningful ways we can take care of the people we love,” Arena added. “This is about more than a policy – it’s about starting the conversation, so families can move forward with clarity, confidence and peace of mind.”
