JK Moving Releases Tips for Winter Moves to Better Navigate Cold Weather and Storms

Winter moves can present special challenges. JK Moving Services, the nation’s largest independently owned moving and storage company, has developed a list of tips to help make the move easier.

“Moves happen throughout the year. With winter moves, weather is a factor that should be considered when preparing. With 40 years of experience, we’ve moved many people during a variety of weather conditions and have some great advice for making cold weather moves more successful,” explained David Cox, president, JK Moving.

With a cold, slushy and snowy winter predicted by the Farmer’s Almanac for much of the nation, JK Moving has developed this list of tips to better prepare for winter moves:

  1. Enjoy savings: Winter can be the best time for moving. For many moving companies, it’s a slower time of year, there is less traffic on the roads, and it can be less expensive than moving in the summer.
  2. Bring warm clothes: A hat, gloves, boots, and scarf are essential, and so is dressing in layers. You will warm up quickly once the physical work begins, so it’s best to wear a few lighter layers than one very heavy layer.
  3. Pack winter supplies: Store items like ice scrapers, snow shovels, blankets, and winter weather gear in a special spot so they are readily available as needed.
  4. Clear driveways and walkways: Make sure your pathways are cleared and safe for you and your move crew.
  5. Have extra phone chargers: Having an available charger ensures you can use it in a tight spot. You may even want to purchase a portable, battery powered charger.
  6. Map it: Print turn-by-turn directions so that you can find your way to your destination without relying solely on your phone’s navigation.
  7. Print emergency contacts: In case anything goes wrong, have a list of people to contact such as your doctor, a handyman (or the property manager), and trusted friends or neighbors.
  8. Monitor weather reports: Track any winter weather heading your way (both to your current home and your new home) and take necessary steps to adjust plans.
  9. Power up: Ensuring electricity and other utilities are turned on will make your arrival comfortable and safe.
