CGTN's Beyond Borders is examining the changing landscape of global governance through a series of discussions focused on geopolitical tensions, artificial intelligence, economic development, critical resources and the evolving relationship between the Global North and Global South.

The 20-minute program comes as the Global Governance Initiative approaches its first anniversary. The initiative calls for a more inclusive international system that moves beyond traditional North-South divisions and emphasizes dialogue among countries and perspectives.

Across its first three episodes, Beyond Borders has explored whether global governance can adapt to a world increasingly shaped by geopolitical competition, technological change and unequal access to resources.

Examining the Global North and Global South

The inaugural episode featured George Galloway, leader of the British Workers Party and former UK MP, and Zhao Hai, director of International Political Studies at China's National Institute for Global Strategy.

Their discussion examined the meaning of the Global North, Western approaches toward China, international trade, supply chains and renewable energy. The conversation also considered China's railway network and differing approaches to economic development and long-term planning.

The guests discussed whether the existing rules-based international order can address the changing realities of a multipolar world.

AI Competition and US-China Relations

The second episode focused on technology and competition between the United States and China.

Wang Huiyao, president of the Center for China and Globalization, spoke with John Quelch, president and executive vice-chancellor of Duke Kunshan University. Their discussion examined US-China "coopetition," artificial intelligence development and the challenges of regulating emerging technologies.

The guests also discussed the possibility of an international AI nonproliferation framework and emphasized the importance of pragmatic engagement between the two countries.

Green Transition and Critical Resources

The third episode, recorded at Peking University, examined the relationship between resource consumption, environmental policy and global development.

Liu Gang, chair professor of Industrial Ecology at Peking University, and Arvea Marieni, an innovation manager and EU Commission expert, discussed differences in steel stocks between developed and developing economies and the implications for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The conversation also highlighted China's transformation of Yichang from a phosphorus-industry center into a location for battery-recycling initiatives. Critical minerals including cobalt and lithium were discussed as important components of the global green transition.

The guests proposed broader international cooperation on critical minerals and emphasized the importance of developing international rules collectively.
