About Glendon Schmitz

Mr. Schmitz has built a career centered on service, leadership and a strong commitment to helping others stay safe in a digital world. He currently serves as chief information security and privacy officer for the Virginia State Corporation Commission. In this role, he oversees cybersecurity strategy and protects sensitive information across critical systems.

Mr. Schmitz's path into cybersecurity began during his nearly 24-year career in the United States Air Force. Over time, he moved through a range of technical and leadership roles, eventually focusing on cyber defense. That experience shaped his approach to problem-solving and gave him a clear sense of purpose as he transitioned into civilian work.

After leaving the military, Mr. Schmitz continued building his career in cybersecurity, including leadership roles in both the financial sector and state government. He later served as chief information security officer for the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, where he worked to protect data across multiple state-run facilities. His work has consistently focused on protecting people, whether in government systems or private organizations.

Alongside his public service, Mr. Schmitz has started a consulting business, Terra Sol LLC. Through this work, he supports small businesses and organizations that may not have access to dedicated cybersecurity teams. He helps them understand risks, strengthen their systems and build a more secure foundation as they grow. He has also worked with companies involved in federal contracting, reviewing proposals and helping ensure cybersecurity requirements are properly addressed.

Mr. Schmitz sees cybersecurity as affecting every part of daily life. He believes that every organization now operates in a digital space and that protecting that space is essential. His work reflects a practical approach to helping people understand what they need to do and how to do it in a way that makes sense for their situation.

Mr. Schmitz earned a bachelor's degree in information technology management from Trident University International and an associate degree in electronic systems technology from the Community College of the Air Force. He holds the Certified Information Systems Security Professional certification. He credits much of his success to the mentors and leaders who supported him throughout his career. Their guidance shaped his path and inspired him to give back in the same way.

Making a Difference

In addition to his professional work, Mr. Schmitz is deeply involved in community efforts. He serves on a scholarship committee through ISC2, helping review applications and support students pursuing careers in cybersecurity. He is also the chair of the board for Tech for Troops, an organization that provides technology, training and support for veterans and their families. He continues to mentor students and young professionals who are starting in the field.

Looking ahead, Mr. Schmitz plans to continue growing his consulting work while staying active in public service and mentorship. He remains focused on helping others build safer systems and stronger careers in cybersecurity.
