DESCRIPTION:
Global power leader Cummins Inc. was recently named a top 5 performer in Forbes magazine’s “Best Employers for Diversity 2022” ranking.
The company finished No. 4 on the list, prepared for Forbes by Statista, a global research firm specializing in business related data. The company was No. 41 on Forbes’ 2021 list.
“At Cummins, we firmly believe that because today’s societal and environmental challenges impact all of us, we must all have a role in addressing them,” said Jennifer Rumsey, Cummins President and Chief Operating Officer. “Creating inclusive environments where employees can bring their full selves to work is key to ensuring we have the best, most diverse solutions to these problems. This recognition is a wonderful acknowledgment of the intentionality we put into this effort and how it impacts our company, teams and communities.”
Cummins has long put an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion, dating back to longtime leader J. Irwin Miller, who supported Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 March on Washington as president of the National Council of Churches. Miller also severed business ties with South Africa in a stance against apartheid in the 1980s.
The Forbes-Statista evaluation was based on four different criteria: direct recommendations from employees for their own employers; employee recommendations for employers other than their own; diversity among top executives and board; and indicators of diversity such as the existence of a management position responsible for diversity, forward-looking communication of diverse company culture or a published diversity report.
"Enabling a diverse, inclusive and accessible environment is integral to who we are,” said Carolyn Butler-Lee, Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at Cummins. “Our unwavering commitment is demonstrated through our history and core values, and we embrace our legacy and responsibility to be a values-driven, positive force in society. This recognition reflects our employees’ and leaders’ hard work and dedication to making room for everyone to succeed.”
Cummins also works for diversity, equity and inclusion outside the company, creating Cummins Powers Women in 2018 to advance gender equity for women and girls in the communities where the company does business around the world, and in 2021 launching Cummins Advocating for Racial Equity to help dismantle institutional racism.
The company also received another recognition recently when it was named to 3BL Media’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens list. The ranking recognizes outstanding environmental, social and governance transparency and performance among the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies. Cummins finished No. 77 in that ranking.
