The organization has updated its ‘My Best Me’ curriculum for students, from elementary school through 12th grade, based on the social philosophy of Dr. Chan Hellman. He encourages young students and adults alike to believe that the future will be better and that they have the power to make it so.

Hope Rising’s recently expanded Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum incorporates the real-world lessons imparted by the theory and application of hope-based pedagogical and therapeutic strategies in communities across the country. Hope is not optimism – hope requires agency and the belief that the individual can help to make their own lives better and attain their goals.

Dr. Hellman, who is a co-author of the award-winning book “Hope Rising: How the Science of Hope Can Change Your Life”, elaborated on his own background during a TED talk at the University of Oklahoma. As a young man, the difficulties of home life forced Dr. Hellman onto the streets to face by himself the challenges of homelessness, giving him the life experience that would later inform much of his research. His work is focused on hope as a psychological strength helping children and adults overcome trauma and adversity.

Hope Rising’s SEL-oriented curriculum is based on the evidence-backed premise that having hope lessens the detrimental effects of toxic stress and increases resiliency in the face of traumatic childhood experiences. Students benefit from a tailored learning environment created by ‘My Best Me,’ which enables them to connect with the subject matter more deeply and enjoy what they are studying.

Through readily available lesson summaries, ‘My Best Me’ encourages effective school communication and fruitful partnerships with parents and guardians. A range of multimedia, age-appropriate lessons are included in the curriculum to facilitate student involvement, cooperation, engagement, and open communication.

“We encourage school boards across the country to take note of the shifting perspectives on children’s education,” said an organization spokesperson. “Family difficulties inevitably spill over into the classroom, with harmful consequences for the individual and the school as a whole. Our lessons build resiliency and hope, yielding better outcomes for everyone.”
