This is what your iPhone screen probably looked like a decade ago (AAPL)

  • Apple released the iPhone 4 nearly 10 years ago, in 2010.
  • The iPhone 4 was the phone's first major redesign since it was introduced in 2007. It had significant additions including Retina display and FaceTime calling.
  • It was the last pre-Siri iPhone before the voice assistant was introduced with the iPhone 4S.
  • Most of the app icons from the iPhone 4 look different in 2019.

An iPhone home screen from 2010 might as well be a relic to iPhone owners today, nearly decade later.

The iPhone 4 was introduced in 2010, and it had many of the features that newer models still use. It was the first model to introduce FaceTime video calling, and the Retina display that iPhones still use.

The most obvious difference between a home screen from long-ago 2010 and today is the size. Though the iPhone arguably changed the game and ushered us into an age of smartphones, old screens from 2010 now look dated and tiny. The iPhone 4 had a 3.5-inch display, compared to a 4.7-inch display on the iPhone 8, and the largest-yet 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max display.

The screen didn't take up the whole iPhone, either — this model still had the home button, although it was pre-Touch ID.

In 2010, iPhones came with some of the same built-in apps that they do today, like Photos, Messages, Camera, and Notes, but the icons are notably different. Settings, Photos, and Maps, in particular, have been updated since — this is what they look like today, compared to the photo above:

iOS 4, which came out along with the iPhone 4, also changed the possibilities of home screens with the addition of folders. Like "utilities" on the above example, iPhone owners could finally combine apps by category, function, or however else worked best for them.

Finally, the 2010 home screen is missing some apps that would become nearly essential to smartphone owners within a few years. For example, Instagram launched in 2010, but it lacked many of the features that made it popular. Snapchat and Tinder didn't exist until 2012, and the new home of viral content, TikTok, wouldn't launch in the US until August 2018. This iPhone also had iTunes, one of Apple's all-time most hated products, which is officially on its way out.
