The WISE 50 over 50 Award Recognizes and Celebrates Canadian Entrepreneurs Over the Age of 50

The newest and fastest growing segment of entrepreneurship is led by people over the age of 50. It’s time to recognize their accomplishments and let all of Canada know what they are doing and what they have to offer.

In 2017, there were 80 organizations from across Canada sharing and spreading the word through their networks and social media about the 50 over 50 Awards. This number grew to 105 in 2018. What this says is there is a growing interest in older entrepreneurship in Canada which will equate to inclusion of support and programs offered to other groups of entrepreneurs.

John Dicks – Nova Graphene Canada Inc. - Helps lead Canada in the development of Graphene Advanced Materials

John Dicks is a founding member of Nova Graphene and was 59 when his Dartmouth Canada Team, now based at The Centre for Ocean Ventures & Entrepreneurship (COVE) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, started Nova Graphene.

“We were working with a proprietary technology out of the US, and had discovered that a by-product of this process contained a good quantity of graphene: a unique crystalline carbon allotrope that will soon be ubiquitous in everything from coatings, to plastics & polymers, to electronics as Nova Graphene expands distribution across many industries.

Sensing a rare opportunity, Nova Graphene CEO, Paul Beasant and I have been pursuing global partnerships with both industry and academia as we validate the myriad uses for our CarbonEra™graphene formulations in everyday manufacturing. Just in the past six months we have expanded our realm of business influence throughout China, Ireland and Europe,” said Dicks.

It is still early days, but they have made progress developing formulations, utilizing their CarbonEra™ Graphene products with a number of fantastic organizations, including: BASF, UOIT, Kingspan, Defence Research & Development Canada, University of Tennessee, CRH Concrete, and Trinity College Dublin.

They now have available affordable, in amounts of major tonnage, graphene-enhanced formulations for Expanded Polystyrene and Polyurethane foams and various cement applications that provide substantial improvements over existing products. Additionally they have found that their proprietary CarbonEra™ Graphene blends work extremely well with a wide range of polymers helping their customers develop lighter and stronger products.

More broadly, John and Nova Graphene are happy to play a small part in ensuring Canada remains a player in the rapidly developing graphene world and the development of advanced materials that will help people, the planet and the profits of the companies that they serve.

Wise Seniors in Management - WISE’s goal is to help encore careerists achieve their business start-up goals by equipping them with the requisite skills, knowledge, resources and confidence.
