Bautex™ Wall System Achieves High Sound Transmission Class Rating

By: PRLog
PRLog - Jun 18, 2013 - SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The Bautex™ Wall System, a composite insulating concrete form (ICF) manufactured by Bautex Systems, LLC, has received a high Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating, demonstrating the noise dampening capabilities of the wall system that are increasingly required today in commercial, government and educational building construction.

Background noise inside of a building can seriously degrade the ability of building occupants to communicate and work efficiently, and can contribute to poor overall indoor environmental quality. The amount of outdoor noise transmitted through the walls of a building, or the noise between adjacent spaces inside of a building, can be significantly reduced by installing wall systems with high STC and Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) performance ratings like the Bautex Wall System.

The Bautex Wall System finished with a single layer of plaster on the inside wall surface and stucco on the exterior wall surface achieved an STC rating of 51 and an OITC rating of 47 according to testing performed to the ASTM E 90 test protocol and conducted by ETS-Lindgren Acoustic Research Laboratory, a nationally accredited testing laboratory.

For public schools in particular, The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has developed the ANSI S12.60 “Acoustical Performance Criteria, Design Requirements and Guidelines for Schools” standard that aims to create a classroom environment that optimizes speech understanding and improves learning. As part of the ANSI S12.60 standard, exterior and interior walls of offices, conference rooms, and main corridors in schools must be rated to a minimum STC of 45, and classroom walls must be rated to a minimum STC of 50.  The Bautex Wall System finished with plaster and stucco meets these standards for school classrooms.

Higher STC ratings required for specialty spaces such as music rooms, cafeterias, and gymnasiums can also be achieved with the Bautex Wall System by changing the exterior and interior finishes of the wall. Using the Bautex Wall System on a project may also help achieve credits for the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC®) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) program for enhanced acoustical performance in schools.
