What Happened?

Shares of school bus company Blue Bird (NASDAQ: BLBD) jumped 4% in the afternoon session after Barclays lifted its price target on the stock to $85 from $75 while reiterating an Overweight rating. The analyst note was tied to a broader reset of machinery and construction forecasts ahead of the second quarter. Barclays argued that production trends, new awards, firm pricing, and ongoing acquisitions supported a solid outlook into 2026. Furthermore, Blue Bird's strong cash generation and healthier balance sheet provided room to fund electric-vehicle programs and plant investments without heavily relying on new debt, helping it navigate industry cycles. Following the price target increase, the stock reached an all-time high. However, analysts cautioned that recent revenue declines and current production capacity limits meant growth could be slower than anticipated, particularly if government funding or tariff policies shifted against the sector.

The shares were trading at $81.53, up 4.2% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Blue Bird’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 13 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 2 months ago when the stock gained 15.4% on the news that the company reported strong “beat and raise” first quarter results. The company's revenue for the quarter was $352.6 million and its adjusted profit was $1 per share, both surpassing Wall Street's expectations. Profitability also improved, with the operating margin increasing to 11.1% from 9.4% in the same quarter last year. Following the strong performance, Blue Bird significantly boosted its full-year forecast. The company now expects net revenue of approximately $1.75 billion, a notable increase from its previous guidance of $1.5 billion, and adjusted EBITDA of around $245 million, signaling strong confidence in its outlook.

Blue Bird is up 74.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $81.53 per share, it has set a new 52-week high. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Blue Bird’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $3,349.
