Monika Killeen’s Debut Confronts the Checkered Legacy of Motherhood with Unflinching Honesty and Unexpected Humor

A spare, penetrating study of female family bonds, identity and the endurance that outlives generations of misogyny. Monika Killeen’s first novel, An Inflammable Act of Kindness, is a close‑up, four‑generation exploration of mother–daughter dynamics and what it means to be a mother. It is told through Meli’s life, a woman settled with a range of consequences brought on by childhood memories, cultural shock and challenges of maturity. The narrative moves much like memory, it is elliptical, precise and charged.

A coming-of-age, slice of life, from the early days in Post-Communist Czechoslovakia to modern London, readers will identify with events that are both personal and universal. Through the use of the narrative technique of the shifting temporal perspective, Killeen shows how small acts of tenderness and misunderstandings accumulate into the architecture of life – they make the ties that bind.

In An Inflammable Act of Kindness, Killeen creates more than just a great read. With a clinician’s eye, she makes a map for us, in her gentle, opaque way, never didactic, to better understand how habit, trauma and culture shape the self. The complex, often messy personalities of the characters in Killeen's book will inspire reflection and give a much needed assurance about the power of kindness.

Despite some grim facts of life, Killeen gives hope for a life well lived, and for finding joy in it.

An Inflammable Act of Kindness is a poetic case-study in feeling. It is brittle, humane and urgent.

This book will appeal to those who don’t seek a sermon but intimacy sharpened by intelligence. The novel offers clarity, sorrow and hard-won hope. It is available now on
