Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) released a new issue brief, “Modernizing Defense: Problems and Solutions,” co-authored by CAGW President Tom Schatz and Director of Policy and Research Sean Kennedy, which details how Congress must reassert its oversight role and hold the Department of Defense (DOD) accountable where necessary.

Tom Schatz and Sean Kennedy issued the following statement:

“The Pentagon’s financial picture has devolved into an unprecedented black hole as the DOD’s budget is the government’s largest discretionary expenditure. If any other agency was having this many monetary issues, it would be completely unacceptable. Congress routinely worsens the picture by failing to provide sufficient oversight and prioritizing parochial interests over a coherent national security strategy. To meet national security and fiscal challenges, the Pentagon must improve its performance, and members of Congress must better perform their role. This issue brief is necessary reading for taxpayers, the media, and every member of Congress.”

Citizens Against Government Waste is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, mismanagement, and abuse in government.
