David Van Den Beld Joins Ryan’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development Practice

Ryan, a leading global tax services and software provider, announced today that David Van Den Beld has joined the Firm as Senior Director of the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) practice and will be based in the Calgary, Alberta office.

In 2020, David retired from a Big 4 accounting firm after 12 years of service where he was the national science leader for SR&ED. His role grew to include leading the government grants practice and serving as the U.S./Canadian markets leader for cross-border research and development opportunities. Prior to this role, he led the Western SR&ED practice at another Big 4 accounting firm for eight years.

“After 20 years of helping clients navigate SR&ED, I am excited to join Ryan in an advisory role and share my knowledge to complement the national SR&ED and Government Incentives practices,” David said. “I value Ryan’s unique approach of specialty tax services and see great synergies between the Firm’s growth strategies and my experience developing high-performing teams.”

Prior to his SR&ED career, David spent 16 years in engineering and management roles. His background ensures that clients’ incentives are founded on science eligibility criteria, their activities align with eligible expenditures, and that their claims are defendable. David’s diverse ability spans many industries, including oil and gas, information technology, mining, energy, manufacturing, pulp and paper, chemical, automotive, aerospace, biotech, agriculture, chemical, and transportation.

“We are excited to welcome a nationally recognized SR&ED expert to the Ryan team,” said Garry Round, Ryan President of Canadian Operations. “David’s engineering background, coupled with his experience leading SR&ED teams, makes him a renowned advocate for our clients seeking to obtain SR&ED credits and other government incentives.”

David holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in mechanical engineering from Toronto Metropolitan University. He has published several articles and developed policy papers with CRA on various SR&ED topics such as Shop Floor R&D and Experimental Production.
