Across 100 B2B software queries and 1,259 AI Overview citations, only 35% of the AI Overview's sources also rank in Google's own top 10. Just 28% of the products it recommends appear in the classic search results.
BENGALURU, IN / ACCESS Newswire / July 10, 2026 / Google now shows two answers on a single screen: an AI Overview at the top, and the familiar list of blue links below it. Most buyers assume the AI Overview is a summary of the results beneath it. A new benchmark from B2B SaaS SEO and GEO agency DerivateX finds it is not.

Across 100 buyer-intent software queries spanning 20 categories, only 35% of the sources cited in Google's AI Overview also rank in Google's own top 10 organic results for the same query. The remaining 65% are AI Overview-exclusive URLs that the search results below never surface. The study, titled "Two Googles, One Query," analyzed 1,259 AI Overview citations against 1,000 organic search results and 445 AI Overview product recommendations, captured in June and July 2026.
The gap widens at the level that matters most to buyers: recommendations. Only 28% of the products named in Google's AI Overview also appear in the search results for the same query. In practice, the shortlist a buyer reads in the AI answer is a mostly different shortlist from the one Google ranks directly below it.
Four findings worth quoting:
35% source overlap. Only 35% of AI Overview citations also rank in Google's top 10. 65% are exclusive to the AI Overview.
28% product overlap. Only 28% of AI Overview-recommended products also appear in the classic search results. 72% are named without ranking.
A 7.3x YouTube gap. The AI Overview cites a YouTube video in 51 of 100 queries. Google's own search results rank YouTube in just 7. Reddit runs the opposite way: it ranks in 82 of 100 search results but is cited by the AI Overview in only 43.
One category tracks Google. Of 20 categories tested, 19 diverge from Google. Only QuickBooks hosting closely tracks it, at 62% overlap.
When the two surfaces do agree, they agree at the top. Where a source appears in both the AI Overview and the search results, 72% of the time it is a Google top-5 ranking, with a median position of #4. Ranking well is not sufficient to be cited by the AI Overview, but among the shared sources, it remains the only reliable way in.
"Ranking #1 on Google still matters. It just no longer matters for the same reason it did in 2023," said Apoorv Sharma, co-founder of DerivateX. "The AI Overview is a separate discovery layer with its own content preferences. Treating it as a byproduct of good SEO is the fastest way to disappear from the surface most buyers now see first."
The research points to three practical shifts for B2B SaaS marketing teams. Treat video as a first-class AI Overview surface, since it is the single largest structural gap between the two. Earn placement in the third-party listicles the AI Overview reads, which account for 63.4% of its citations. And measure AI Overview citations and Google rankings as two separate metrics rather than assuming one predicts the other. This is the work DerivateX does as a GEO agency for B2B SaaS: mapping each engine's citation surface separately and engineering placement into the specific sources it reads.
The full Two Googles benchmark report, including the complete methodology and category-by-category data, is available on the DerivateX site. The study is the fifth in an ongoing DerivateX research series into how AI engines choose, recommend, and cite software.
