Edgewood High School Also Honored for Exemplary Academic Excellence

WEST COVINA, CA / ACCESS Newswire / May 21, 2026 / West Covina Unified School District (WCUSD) proudly celebrates the recognition of three outstanding schools - Mt. SAC Early College Academy (MECA), Edgewood High School, and Hollencrest Middle School - as recipients of the prestigious California Distinguished Schools Award by the California Department of Education (CDE).

In addition, Edgewood High School received special recognition at the Exemplary Academics level, highlighting the school's exceptional student achievement and commitment to academic excellence.

The California Distinguished Schools Program honors some of California's most exemplary and inspiring public schools for demonstrating outstanding student performance, academic growth, and positive school climate. According to the California Department of Education, schools selected for the award must achieve among the highest levels of academic success and demonstrate strong indicators in areas such as English language arts, mathematics, suspension rates, chronic absenteeism, and student engagement.

Mt. SAC Early College Academy continues to distinguish itself through rigorous academic opportunities, innovative instructional practices, and a strong college-going culture. The school has earned statewide and national recognition for its commitment to student achievement and early college access.

Edgewood High School's recognition at the Exemplary Academics level further highlights the school's outstanding instructional programs, high academic performance, and dedication to preparing students for college, career, and future success.

Hollencrest Middle School was also recognized for its exceptional commitment to academic excellence, student support, and the creation of a positive and engaging learning environment that empowers all students to succeed.

The California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes elementary schools and secondary schools in alternating years, with awardees holding the title for two years. The 2026 honorees were recognized during a statewide celebration hosted by the California Department of Education.
