In a rapidly changing music industry, one name out of the few composers has stood out and stayed relevant all over these years: JingYuan Li also known as John Li. For him, music has always been a way of language to capture and express emotions and transform silence into story and bring people closer together. Beginning his journey from China to Australia and now the US, John has gained deep knowledge and perfected his technical mastery over composing and orchestrating.
Next Chapter – New Opportunities
After orchestrating and composing multiple shows and projects, John is all set to take on new challenges. Currently, he is working closely with Epson Wu from Slurme Music, a leading music and audio production company as a contracted composer. His work includes serving as one of the lead composers for (“Stargate”), the upcoming animated adaptation of a hit Tencent sci-fi series with over 170 million views. The production, led by Qiyuan Yinghua (Qi Yuan Pictures) and music-supervised by Epson Wu, began in May 2025.
Aside from TV shows, he is also working as a composer and crafting sounds for upcoming game projects 一Star Gate , Overmortal and Code Name: Bang Bang. It is developed by LTGAMES GLOBAL and Sleepless Night respectively. Along with these, he is also working with Score Addiction, creating original cinematic compositions for their globally distributed library represented by BMG Production Music.
Motivation Behind Everything
For John, the motivation behind music has always been channeled naturally and extended from his inner world. Growing up, he came upon the realisation that some emotions, memories and experiences were too fragile for words to express; however with music, it could find its fullest expression. Choosing music as his life path was never a question to ponder for him. Instead, it was just an inevitable choice. Music became a medium where he could be both vulnerable and universal, where he understood that private feelings could be transformed into something that can be shared and understood. It resonated with him in such a deep and meaningful way that having the ability to speak this language, and to create music that resonates with others, meant the world to him.
Inspirations That Shaped Music
Ichilo Aoba, a Japanese chamber folk artist known for her intimate yet ethereal voice and her extraordinary harmonic sensibility, is one of his strongest inspirations this particular year. Her music carries a calm, healing quality that constantly reminds him that everything will be okay. The organic, nature-like character is what sparks a deep longing in him for the natural world.
It has reinforced his own approach to composition: restraint and intentionality often convey greater depth than maximalism.
Additionally, composers like Ryuichi Sakamoto also inspire him to balance experimentation with clarity, constantly expanding his musical vocabulary while remaining attentive to emotional coherence. These influences have guided him to work, where he strives to weave texture, structure, and narrative into every piece.
What Sets Him Apart
John’s uniqueness in his music lies in his cross-cultural perspective. Born in China, trained in Australia and now working internationally, his journey has given him a multi-layered identity where he can swiftly transcend between eastern and western traditions, from orchestral textures to intimate guitar work. His narrative sensitivity with structural clarity perfectly blends and always aims for music that feels both personal and universal.
His approach to exploring different genres and experimenting with composing and orchestrating is what had him stand out among the rest in the industry. His music is flexible, still evolving, and always on the way to discovering new elements that he can add to his compositional arsenal.
